Karl Franz
Karl is currently a
Director of Hamburg Bulk Carriers and has been a Member of the
Institute since 1992 and was promoted to Fellow in 1998. Karl’s
background in shipping began after a brief military service and dates
back to 1979, where he began as a trainee with Uni-Charter in short sea
dry cargo operations and chartering. Karl passed the Hamburg
Chamber of Commerce examination in 1991 as a graduate of the 'Akademie
der Hamburger Verkehrswirtschaft'.

Tony Dixon
Tony commenced his
shipping career in traditional liner markets before moving into tanker
broking and operations in the late 1960’s. A founding partner and
Director of Seascope Shipping in 1972 he remained with the group
following its flotation in 1997 and subsequent merger with Braemar
Seascope. A member of the Institute since 1965 and Fellow since 1970 he
is past Chairman of ICS London Branch and Chairman of the Education
Committee for the last 5 years. He has also served on Federation
Council and other Committees of the Institute over a period of years in
addition to sitting on Intertanko’s Documentary Committee and other
industry bodies.

Kevin Shakesheff
Kevin is Chairman
of Casper Shipping Ltd, a leading specialist ships agency organisation
operating in the North East of England and Scotland. He started his
career in shipping in South Wales and after several management
positions emigrated with his family to Spain to become a tanker broker.
Six years later he returned to the UK to take up the post as MD of
Clarkson Brothers and Casper. In 2002 he orchestrated an MBO.
A member of the Institute since 1974, Kevin has held several positions
including-
• Education officer and Vice Chairman, in South Wales
• Education officer and Chairman Tees and Hartlepool Branch
• A member of Controlling Council and two periods as a Federation
Council delegate
Kevin is married with 3 children and a grandchild, his hobbies include
Rugby, Tennis and Golf, travel and Spanish language.

Alan Phillips
Commodore Alan
Phillips was awarded a scholarship to enter BRNC as a Seaman Officer in
the Royal Navy in 1967. After a succession of operational appointments,
including a deployment to the Arabian Gulf in 1982, he commanded the
frigate HMS PHOEBE (87-89) and the icebreaker HMS ENDURANCE (93 –95).
He was a member of the Royal College of Defence Studies (RCDS) in '96
and a student on the Higher Command and Staff Course (HCSC) in '99. A
Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, he took early retirement from
the Royal Navy in Nov 2001 to take up his current appointment as
Director of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers.
