| TutorShip is
ICS’ own distance learning programme covering its syllabus and preparing
students to take the Professional Qualifying Examinations (PQE) or the
Foundation Diploma. |
| The courses are designed to
meet the needs of personnel in all spheres of the shipping profession.
Providing not only the necessary preparation for the ICS exams but also giving
students an opportunity to broaden their understanding of the industry and
develop career potential. |

| TUTORSHIP COURSE CONTENT |
| TutorShip is
divided into three Groups. All candidates taking the PQE need to take Shipping
Business in their first year. The remaining subjects may be taken in any order
but candidates must sit a minimum of three subjects at their first attempt
('sitting' means making a genuine effort to answer five questions in each
paper). The PQE must be completed within five years.

| METHOD OF STUDY |
| Students need to
enrol with ICS in London or one of the 14 distance learning centres worldwide.
Once enrolled students will be forwarded a course book and allocated a tutor
who will guide them through their studies. All tutors are either practicing or
recently retired and all will be specialists in their field.

| TutorShip
assignments are delivered either electronically – via email or fax
– or by the normal postal system depending on the student’s
preference. |
| Each course book
contains self assessment and a further 10 “Test” questions and a
mock exam that can be submitted for marking and comments to a tutor. Each
assignment is returned by email within 7 – 10 working days. For full

| REGISTRATION AND EXAMINATION ENTRY
|
All candidates for the ICS PQE have to
register as students of the Institute before they may apply to enter for the
exams. They then need to fill in a separate entry form for the examinations
themselves. Candidates must register each year with the Institute in which they
intend to sit an examination paper. All these forms are available online.
The registration year is from 1 June to 31 May. |
| REGISTRATION FORMS |
| Registration forms and fees
must reach ICS by the following dates for each exam year: |

31 October - if the candidate wishes to sit the exam in a non-designated
examination centre. ICS will see if this can be arranged and there may be
supplementary charges.

| 14 January – for candidates at
designated centres and branches overseas including the Republic of Ireland.
|
| 14 February – for candidates in the
UK. |
| EXAM ENTRY FORMS |
| Once registered students need to complete
and return the exam entry form with the appropriate fee to ICS no later than
the following dates of each examination year:

| 21 January – for candidates at
centres overseas and in the Republic of Ireland.
|
| 21 February for candidates
in the UK.
|
| The examinations take place
annually in April at centres around the world. The above dates apply also to
those taking the exams at non-designated exam centres overseas or in the UK. |
| Registration and examination
entry forms can be found in the ‘Registration
and exam entry procedures section’. Registration and exam entry
forms received after these dates will not be accepted. |
| EXEMPTIONS
|
| You may well qualify for exemptions against
some of the subjects under examination, please check our exemptions page if you
have or are studying at Universities or Colleges elsewhere. |
| TUTORSHIP FEES |
| For those students wishing to
enroll and study TutorShip through London, the following fees apply. For those
wishing to study through one of the worldwide distance learning centres, the
fees may well vary to reflect the currency that the student earns in. Please
check details for fees against each of the individual distance learning centres
if you are planning to study outside the UK.

PREP
|
| In early March or April, ICS runs a
PREP
course in the UK – a weekend residential workshop where candidates of all
ages and levels taking the ICS exams can attend tutorials in all subjects. See
