TUTORSHIP

TutorShip is ICS’ own distance learning programme covering its syllabus and preparing students to take the Professional Qualifying Examinations (PQE) or the Foundation Diploma.
The courses are designed to meet the needs of personnel in all spheres of the shipping profession. Providing not only the necessary preparation for the ICS exams but also giving students an opportunity to broaden their understanding of the industry and develop career potential.
TutorShip courses are written by specialists in their field and updated regularly.
"The TutorShip course offered by ICS has for many years been an integrated part of the J Lauritzen's shipping trainee programme. We consider the nature of the programme - distance learning - combined with the range of subjects tailor-made for younger shipping professionals".
- T Janholt, President and Chief Executive Officer J Lauritzen.

METHOD OF STUDY
Students need to enrol with ICS in London or one of the 14 distance learning centres worldwide. Once enrolled students will be forwarded a course book and allocated a tutor who will guide them through their studies. All tutors are either practicing or recently retired and all will be specialists in their field.
TutorShip assignments are delivered either electronically – via email or fax – or by the normal postal system depending on the student’s preference.
Each course book contains self assessment and a further 10 “Test” questions and a mock exam that can be submitted for marking and comments to a tutor. Each assignment is returned by email within 7 – 10 working days. For full details of the ICS syllabus see the Professional Qualifying Examinations section.
“What can I say, TutorShip was fantastic, would recommend it to anyone, good info, great teachers, good friends and great times”.

REGISTRATION AND EXAMINATION ENTRY
All candidates for the ICS PQE have to register as students of the Institute before they may apply to enter for the exams. They then need to fill in a separate entry form for the examinations themselves. Candidates must register each year with the Institute in which they intend to sit an examination paper. All these forms are available online.
The registration year is from 1 June to 31 May.
REGISTRATION FORMS
Registration forms and fees must reach ICS by the following dates for each exam year:
31 October - if the candidate wishes to sit the exam in a non-designated examination centre. ICS will see if this can be arranged and there may be supplementary charges.
14 January – for candidates at designated centres and branches overseas including the Republic of Ireland.
14 February – for candidates in the UK.
EXAM ENTRY FORMS
Once registered students need to complete and return the exam entry form with the appropriate fee to ICS no later than the following dates of each examination year:
21 January – for candidates at centres overseas and in the Republic of Ireland.
21 February for candidates in the UK.
The examinations take place annually in April at centres around the world. The above dates apply also to those taking the exams at non-designated exam centres overseas or in the UK.
Registration and examination entry forms can be found in the ‘Registration and exam entry procedures section’. Registration and exam entry forms received after these dates will not be accepted.
