LINER BUSINESS

A one day course introducing the business of Liner trades. The course is directed at employees of liner shipping operators, liner agents, or students studying for NVCQs as well as importers and exporters.
It offers a brief introduction to whole field of liner trade operations as well as liner cargoes and the way in which the terms of sale of goods impacts on the liner transport contract.
This course is delivered by a series of lectures.
COURSE CONTENT
WHAT IS A LINER?
A ship type quiz to break the ice. The characteristics of a liner service, comparison with tramp trades, private and common carrier concepts. The concepts of break-bulk, unitization, containerisation, Lo-lo and Ro-ro. Container movement - factory to onboard. The main liner routes - Transpacific, Transatlantic, FE/EU, Intra Asia. Liner cargoes - an outline of commodities and special cargoes.
LINER SHIPS AND SERVICES
Ship sizes and capacity - DWT, GT, TEU, lane metres. Container ships - Feeders, Panamax, ultra large, Geared/ungeared options. Ro-ro - passenger and freight ferries, short and deep sea types, pcc and pctc. Future developments - Fast ships and Malaccamax. General purpose and specialist ships including reefers, barge carriers. Stowage and cargo handling - on shore and on board. Liner service options - End to end, RTW, Pendulum, Hub & Spoke.
LINER OPERATIONS
Operating company structures, ship management, trade and marketing. In-house and independent agents and their role. Handling the ship in port. An Introduction to Conferences, Consortia, Alliances and Independents.
INTERMODAL OPERATIONS
The terminology of containerisation - FCL, LCL, CY, CFS, ICD etc. Terminals and depots, pre and on carriage arrangements, feeders. Carrier/merchant haulage. Container ownership and management. Container types.
SALES OF GOODS
Including Incoterms, methods of payment, UCP500
THE BILL OF LADING AND OTHER DOCUMENTS
A workshop based on the booking, freighting and documentation of a parcel of liner cargo.
This one day course is ideal preparation for those studying for the Foundation Diploma and has chosen Liner Trades as their Group 2 subject.
