FACTS AND STATISTICS |
| The Institute of
Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS) is the only internationally recognised
professional body representing shipbrokers, ship managers and agents
worldwide.
ICS has 23 branches in key shipping areas,
3,500 individual and 120 company members.
In addition to a being a professional
membership organisation, ICS sets and examines the syllabus for
membership.
This year 2,080 students sat 4,900 papers
in 85 exam centres around the world.
(2008: there were 1,465 students sitting 3,504 papers in 84 exam
centres)

| INDIVIDUAL
MEMBERSHIP OF ICS |
| To become a member
of ICS, an individual needs to pass the ICS professional qualifying
exams and then spend an aggregated time in the industry – this is
normally four years.
In certain cases an individual may obtain
membership by writing a dissertation which goes before the Controlling
Council. Additionally a special clause in the organisations byelaws is
sometimes used to enable people of seniority and standing in the
industry to become a member.

| EDUCATION |
|
To prepare students for the ICS these
exams, ICS runs its own educational programme called TutorShip which is
administered by distance learning centres worldwide.
ICS is a ‘not for profit’ organisation with
charitable status for its education fund.

| EXAMINATIONS |
| ICS sets and
examines the syllabus for the ICS Foundation Diploma and the
Professional Qualifying Examinations.
ICS sets its examinations in consultation
with the shipping industry and maritime academic institutions and is
accredited and monitored by the Open and Distance Learning Council.
Subjects covered by the exams include Shipping Business, Legal
Principles, Economics of Sea Transport & International Trade and
the core shipbroking disciplines of Dry Cargo Chartering, Ship
Operations & Management, Tanker Chartering, Ship Sale &
Purchase, Liner Trades, Port Agency.

| TRAINING |
| ICS offers a range
of training courses to its membership and the industry. Many bespoke
training packages are developed for companies too. See the Training

| DISTANCE
LEARNING CENTRES |
| ICS has 16 distance
learning centres at present providing TutorShip and other educational
and training opportunities for those in the shipping industry. Further

| COMPANY
MEMBERSHIP |
| Companies can
become company members if they have at least one senior member of staff
qualified to Fellow (FICS) or Member (MICS) status. Companies with no
qualified members of staff can become affiliated members for five
years, by which time they must have either the required number of
qualified staff and graduate to full membership or resign. |
| FEDERATION
COUNCIL |
| The Federation
Council is the UK trade association for shipbroking, ship management
and agency sectors, promoting and protecting their interests in
consultation with UK government, statutory bodies and the European
Commission. |

| HISTORY |
|
ICS was founded in 1911 and awarded its
Royal Charter in 1920. The Institute received a Supplemental Charter in
1984 that enabled international membership.
