"Understanding Shipping" bursary program
South African style
In an exciting development, the ICS
together with Jo Tankers has agreed on a
bursary program for Sithengile Secondary
School which is situated outside Durban,
in the area of Claremont. The program, a
part-time course typically completed
over nine months, commenced at the start
of the current school year on 22 January
2009.
The course, Understanding Shipping, was
awarded to the 10 best students who
completed Grade 11 in 2008 and all of
whom had taken Maritime Economics as one
of the grade 11 subjects. These 10
students will thereby, in addition to
their grade 12 subjects, also be
completing this course, in their final
school year. Upon successful completion
of the course each student will receive
a diploma from the ICS in London.
Bursary recipients were unaware of the
surprise awaiting them on their first
day back at school after the summer
holidays. The presentations were made to
the selected students during their
Maritime Economics class, in front of
their peers, teacher and headmaster.
Megan Harris from the ICS, who is the
driving force behind many of the
programs offered by the ICS and this
venture in particular, was on hand to
announce the names of each of the 10
recipients. The students were presented
with the bursaries by Jeremy Skeen (Jo
Tankers' South African Commercial
Representative).
When Jo Tankers contacted the ICS in
Durban regarding the possible support of
a bursary scheme for one of the various
programs offered by the ICS, the
Institute was thrilled at the approach
of corporate sponsor, which at the time
was a relatively new concept. Further,
the Jo Tankers' bursary sponsorship of
10 Sithengile Secondary learners has
been very well received by the local
Claremont community, the local maritime
industry and naturally by the ICS who is
confident this will set an example for
other corporations to join in and
support.

Liverpool dinner pulls in the laughs
The Liverpool Branch Annual Dinner was
held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in
Liverpool on the 24 April and, despite
the current recession, it was very well
supported with nearly 400 Members and
guests in attendance. Excellent food was
served and we are told that everybody
enjoyed the evening! Speeches were given
by Institute Director, Alan Phillips and
the Branch Chairman, John Keenan after
which the guests were entertained by a
local comedian, John Evans.
Before
the meal started a 'Heads & Tails'
raffle was arranged in support of a
local Children's Charity, Claire House.
This was the first time that the Branch
had arranged a Raffle at the Dinner and
we are pleased to announce that a
magnificent amount of GBP5431.00 was
raised. This was considerably more than
Claire House expected and they have
asked the Branch to thank everybody who
took part. Special thanks must go to
Daniel Ralston, who won the raffle but
decided to immediately auction the
prize, the Bibby Line Group and John
Sivret of Cammell Laird both of whom
made generous donations and Chris
Earnshaw of C D Earnshaw Ltd who finally
won the auction.
