UNDERSTANDING SHIPPING

A nine month distance learning programme, this course is ideal for staff with little or no exposure to ships or shipping. Although it is equally suitable for those already employed in shipping who wish to gain a broader insight into and a better understanding of this global industry. It includes:
Nine lessons with multiple choice questions marked by a dedicated tutor
A short written essay
TutorShip certificate
An allocated tutor guides a student through the nine courses/lessons in the course book. At the end of each lesson the student submits a completed test paper - multiple choice format - to their tutor plus a short written answer to a test question.
At the end of the course students are assessed on the best six out of the first eight test papers plus the ninth test which is designed to cover the whole course.
Those achieving a pass will be required to attend an interview with a member of ICS before being awarded the TutorShip certificate "Understanding Shipping"

SHIPS AND TRADE
Global shipping and trading patterns. Types of vessels. Maritime geography.
THE BUSINESS AND ITS PLAYERS
Shipping companies: principals, intermediaries and practitioners: their role and responsibilities. National and International organisations. Classification and registration societies. Shipping contracts.
BILLS OF LADING
The three functions and different types of Bills of lading. Release and delivery of cargo.
PORT AGENCY
Role and authority of an agent. Port services and the providers. Cargo working. Husbandry. Local requirements.
BULK CARRIER AND TANKER DOCUMENTS
Charter parties and other documents. Basic laytime concepts.
LINER AGENCY DOCUMENTAION
The agency agreement. Space allocation, sales and marketing, dealing with cargo bookings, special cargo. Documentation. Conferences and consortia.
CHARTERING
The chartering markets and different types of charter. How the deal is made. The charterer's authority and responsibility. Post fixture responsibilities. Brokerage. Specialist brokers.
PORTS AND CARGOES
The location, origins and facilities of ports. A selection of some ports with details of their import and export facilities.
SHIP MANAGEMENT AND OPERATIONS
Different types of management - integral or independent managers. Roles and responsibilities of a ship management department.
